How to Prepare Your Home for Fall

With the fall season in full swing, now is the perfect time to prepare your home for the colder months ahead. Performing year-end maintenance now will help ensure that your home is as safe and energy-efficient as possible once temperatures start to drop. To get you started, here is a quick list of essential tasks that will help safeguard your home:

1. Clean Gutters and Downspouts

Keeping gutters and downspouts free of debris is essential for preventing potential water damage, but it’s especially important in the fall as leaves and other debris tend to accumulate. The weight of debris and standing water can also cause your gutters to sag, which could result in costly repairs later on.

2. Test Home Safety Devices

Colder temperatures mean furnaces, wood stoves and fireplaces may be used more frequently, increasing the risk of fire and carbon monoxide leaks. Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure proper operation and replace batteries as necessary. Check the gauge and expiration date on fire extinguishers and brush up on maintenance and operation recommendations.

3. Seal Air Leaks

Air leakage, commonly found around windows and doors, can cause uncomfortable drafts and increase your energy costs. Cracks and crevices in stationary areas can be sealed with caulk. Moving parts (e.g., window tracks) can be sealed with weather stripping.

4. Give Appliances a Pre-Holiday Tuneup

Your refrigerator, oven and dishwasher may see more usage during the holiday season, and it would be a terrible time for something to break. Simple tasks like cleaning refrigerator condenser coils, recalibrating ovens and clearing dishwasher drains help keep your appliances in good condition. It’s also a good idea to schedule any professional maintenance you may need before the holiday season is in full swing.
